Warren "Red" Spicer, age 89, of Old Cottage Grove, Minnesota died Wednesday, January 25, 2012, at his home, surrounded by his family.
VISITATION will be 3-7 PM Sunday at Kok Funeral Home, 7676 80th St. S. Cottage Grove (651-459-2875), and also one hour prior to the service at church. FUNERAL SERVICE 11 AM Monday at Cottage Grove United Church of Christ, 7008 Lamar Ave. S. Cottage Grove. Interment will be in the Cottage Grove Cemetery.
Warren Spicer was born at Anchor Hospital in St. Paul on December 30, 1922 to George and Martha (Strutz) Spicer. At age 13, he moved to a farm in the Woodbury area and graduated from Harding High School. He entered active duty in the US Army in February 1943, serving in the Pacific (The Hebrides, Okinawa and Japan). On June 26, 1949, Warren married Lucille Brown in Cottage Grove. For the next 62 years, "Red and Lucy" made their home in Old Cottage Grove, where they raised five children.
Red spent many years as a floor covering installer and was a long-time member of the Minnesota Floor Coverers Union Local 596. Red and Lucy and their children were always active at their church. Red loved to work hard and help people. He was an avid Minnesota Twins and Vikings fan, and an accomplished bowler, fisherman, hunter and gardener.
Red is survived by children Bruce (Donna), Richard (Karen), Diane (Glenn) Hoeft, Susan (Gary) Weiby, Sheri (Paul) Wohlers; 12 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille in June of 2011; and four brothers: George, Elton, Llewellyn and Clinton.
Memorials to Cottage Grove United Church of Christ preferred in lieu of flowers.
