Thomas W. (Tom) Hofmann, age 55 of Columbia Heights, formerly from Cottage Grove, beloved brother and uncle, passed away unexpectedly due to natural causes on September 30, 2020. Tom was born on June 9, 1965 in St. Paul, Minnesota. He was the fifth child of Robert and Darlene (Dunbar) Hofmann. Tom grew up in Cottage Grove, Minnesota where he enjoyed playing with his brothers and sister, friends from the neighborhood, and in community sports. Tom was an all-around athlete and loved to play baseball, football, and basketball. Tom was a graduate of Cretin High School, Class of 1984, where he was known for his speed on the athletic field and where he earned the nickname “the Gazelle”. He then moved on to St. John’s University in Collegeville, Minnesota graduating with the Class of 1988.
Always a good and hard worker, Tom applied himself in a variety of industries and made many friends along the way. His most important priority was his family. From the time he was young, Tom’s love of family was evident. He enjoyed having fun with all his siblings. He eagerly anticipated annual family vacations at Pelican Lake where he was able to connect with cousins from both sides of the family.
Throughout his life, he was a steady and consistent presence at family gatherings. When he became an uncle, he drew from his past and always made a point to interact playfully with his nieces and nephews. He valued every new baby that came into the family. As the family grew, he joyfully participated in family milestones: graduations, weddings, baptisms, confirmations, etc. He was a devoted son. He brought joy and comfort to his parents and was a steady and faithful helper to them, especially in their later years. He was a sweet and gentle soul and will be greatly missed.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Darlene Hofmann. He is survived by his sister Lori (Dave) and brothers Rob (Kathleen), Dan (Bernadette), Paul, John (Naomi), Pete (Sue), and Tim (Lisa) along with many nieces, nephews, a grandniece, and a grandnephew. He leaves behind many friends that knew his love and kindness.
Due to the pandemic, services will be private. Burial will be in the St Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church cemetery in St. Paul Park, Minnesota. Those wishing to honor Tom's memory are encouraged to make a donation in his name to the American Heart Association.
