Sylvia Spiess

Sylvia Spiess, age 95 of Cottage Grove, passed away Jan. 18, 2017 at United Hospital in St. Paul.
Memorial visitation will be 4-7 pm, Mon., Jan. 23, 2017 at Kok Funeral Home, 7676 – 80th Street S., Cottage Grove. Private Interment Newport Cemetery, Newport.
Sylvia Spiess was born April 13, 1921 in St. Paul, Minnesota to John and Vasilka (Buza) Grui. She grew up in the Romanian community of St. Paul and began working at a local factory and laundromat at a young age. She met Edward C. Spiess and they were united in marriage on February 1, 1941 in St. Paul. They resided in St. Paul until 1954 when they moved to Roseville. She did a lot of knitting, crocheting and canning through the years. Sylvia also became the authentic Romanian pastry expert in the family. In the early 1960's they moved to Cottage Grove. She worked with Ed in the Park Grove Realty Office for several years. She also did product demonstrations for numerous grocery stores until she was in her mid 80's. She loved to make baked goods, especially banana bread, to give to those around her. Often times, she made her baked goods and jams and jellies to be sold at nearby farmers' markets.
She is preceded in death by her husband Edward; daughter Patricia Buchan; brothers George and Charles Grui; sisters Lena Davis, Marie Behnke and Julie Melanson and son-in-law Larry Stoehr. Sylvia is survived by her children Edward (Gayle) Spiess, Sylvia Stoehr, David (Debbie) Spiess; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren and son-in-law Jim Buchan.
