Steven Paul Bartley

September 17, 1952 – March 6, 2025

Steve Bartley, 72, affectionately known as "Papa Barts" and "Captain Steve," passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family and friends. He left this world as he lived it – on his own terms and true to the spirit of his favorite Sinatra tune, "My Way."

A lifelong Minnesotan, Steve was born in St. Paul to John Walter Bartley and Judy Ann (Wright) Pacala. He graduated from Harding (’71) and the University of St. Thomas (’75). His life was defined by kindness, generosity, and an unwavering commitment to helping others. Known for his larger-than-life personality, corny jokes, and welcoming spirit, Steve brought joy to everyone around him. An adventurer at heart, his extensive travels took him to all 50 states and many other countries, collecting hats along the way. Steve was also a creative problem solver, versatile handyman, and avid boater. But, above all else, he was a proud and devoted husband, father, papa, uncle, mentor, and friend.

Steve had many career successes in medical device sales and built a successful property management business in his sixties, but his greatest joy always came from his family. Despite everything ALS stole, Steve’s spirit and humor remained unshaken, and he continued to cherish every moment with family and friends. He faced ALS with remarkable courage, grace, and strength, and was an inspiration to all who knew him.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents and older brother, John “Butch” Bartley. He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Debbie; their children, Angela (Bret) Winterle, Melissa McElroy (S/O, Sean Bunch), & Ryan (Christine) Bartley; and nine grandchildren (Hannah & Grace Gossman; Madeline, John & Margaret Winterle; Lillian McElroy; and Alice, Elizabeth & Katherine Bartley).

A Memorial Service will be held Friday, April 4, 2025, at Five Oaks Church, 4416 Radio Drive; Woodbury, MN at 11 am, with visitation starting at 10 am and a luncheon to follow service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to either the ALS Association (www.als.org) or Team Gleason (www.teamgleason.org), both of which provided incredible support to Steve's entire family.
