Stanley G. Thommes, 91, of Cottage Grove, formerly of the Chicago area died Friday evening, March 16, 2007, at his home following a lengthy illness.
Stanley G. Thommes was born January 29, 1916 in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Anthony and Hannah (Schmitz) Thommes. He was raised in the Chicago area and was united in marriage to Dorothy E. Lang on September 14, 1940 in Riverside, Illinois. He served in the United States Navy and was stationed in New Guinea during WWII. Stanley was employed for many years by the Edward Hines Lumber Company retiring in 1978. He enjoyed wood working and carving and was an avid Cubs fan. Stanley and his wife moved to Cottage Grove in 2001 to be closer to family.
Stanley is survived by his wife of 66 years, Dorothy of Cottage Grove, two sons; Robert S. (Bonnie K.) Thommes of Owatonna, Minnesota and James W. Thommes of Cottage Grove, six grandchildren; Jeffrey, Lori, Gerald, Julie, Christian and Nicholas, seven great-grandchildren; Alissa, Rylan, Zachary, Blaine, Jeffrey, Tavin and Stanley, his sister, Josephine Stimek of Chicago and his brother, Gerard Thommes of Spring Hill, Florida. He was preceded in death by an infant grandson, Michael.
