Shirley Kathryn (Lynghaug) Wamstad, age 83 of Newport, beloved mother and grandmother, passed away on October 3, 2016 at her home surrounded by her loving family. With courage and strength, she battled two occurrences of Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. The third occurrence was too aggressive and untreatable. She accepted the news with sadness, yet also with grace and dignity and filled her remaining days creating more memories with her family and close friends.
Memorial service will be 11:00 am Monday, October 10, 2016, at Newport Lutheran Church 900 15th St. Newport, MN. Visitation will be Sunday October 9, 2016 from 4-7 pm at Kok Funeral Home 1201 Portland Ave. St. Paul Park, MN and also one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment Newport Cemetery.
Shirley Kathryn Wamstad was born September 3, 1933 in Devil's Lake, North Dakota to Halvor and Frances (Reisdorph) Lynghaug. She grew up on the west side of St. Paul and later graduated from high school in McVille, North Dakota. Shirley met Arvid Gilmore Wamstad and the dear couple was united in marriage on January 18, 1952. They raised their children in various cities in North Dakota, California and South St. Paul before finally settling with their family in Newport in 1963. She cherished making a warm and welcoming home for all those that visited.
Shirley was an active longtime member of Newport Lutheran Church and was guided by an enduring faith. Among Shirley's favorite things were reading, sewing, cooking, bowling, snowmobiling, pontooning, spending time in her flower gardens, warm weather vacations and was an avid sports spectator. She enjoyed many summers at their cabins on Blake, Bone and Grindstone Lakes in Northern Wisconsin with her kids, grandkids and friends. Above all, Shirley enjoyed spending time with her family and supporting the grandchildren by attending their many activities and events over the years.
Shirley will be sadly missed and forever adored by her children, Guy (Kim), Rob (Jeanne), David, Cindy (Brian) Domeier, Bruce (Lori); 14 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; sister Darlene Daily and other treasured family and friends. She is preceded in death by her loving husband of 59 years, Gilmore; brothers George, Merle and Robert.
