Ronald Shelton, age 81, of Cottage Grove, MN, passed away peacefully on January 13, 2025. Ron was a beloved community figure known for his meticulous planning of parties, love of the water and Jimmy Buffet songs, legendary tropical drink concoctions, and boundless generosity to family and friends.
Ron was born and raised on a farm in Heron Lake, MN, where he developed a strong work ethic from an early age alongside his brothers, Larry and Rick. Ron went on to graduate from high school and then Mankato State University where he also served in the National Guard while attending school. In 1969, he married Diane, the love of his life. They had three children—Cindy, Brian, and Jeff—and spent countless weekends boating with friends, attending card club, or hosting memorable get-togethers at their home, marina, or the Beach House.
Ron’s passion for life was evident in everything he did. Throughout his life he took joy in his work at the refinery and the marinas, volunteering at church, and traveling extensively with Diane, visiting all 50 states and many destinations around the world. But it was his devotion to his family and friends that truly defined him. His selfless love, generosity, and unwavering support will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Ron is survived by his children Cindy Mullen, Brian (Maria), and Jeff; seven grandchildren; his brothers Larry and Rick (Marilyn). He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Diane, and his parents Lloyd and Vera Shelton.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Zion Lutheran Church, which will distribute the memorials to Ron’s favorite local charities.
