Powell F. Sams, 81 of Cottage Grove formerly of Parkersburg, West Virginia, died on Tuesday, March 25, 2008 at United Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota from complications of heart disease.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 29, 2008 at the Peaceful Grove United Methodist Church in Cottage Grove with the Reverend Deb DeMeester, officiating. Visitation will be from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. Friday at Kok Funeral Home, Cottage Grove.
Funeral services will also be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 1, 2008 at the Lockport United Methodist Church in Parkersburg, West Virginia, with the Reverend Kenneth Nolan and the Reverend L. Norman Butler, officiating. Visitation will be from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. Monday at the Leavitt Funeral Home in Parkersburg. Entombment will be at Sunset Memory Gardens in Parkersburg.
Powell F. Sams was born October 7, 1926 in Parkersburg, West Virginia, the son of Everett Duane and Goldie (Lowers) Sams. He was raised and educated in Parkersburg and later enlisted in the United States Army where he served both in WWII and Korea. He was united in marriage to Anna Belle White on September 16, 1956. He was employed as an engineer for the Pillsbury Company for twenty-five years, where he designed the packaging for Meals Ready to Eat. He later worked for Boeing at NASA on various space projects, retiring in 1997. Powell especially enjoyed golf, singing in the church choir and cooking.
He is survived by his son, Jon ?Bart? (Nancy) Sams, daughter, Lea Anna (Peter) McGowan, both of Cottage Grove, daughter-in-law, Theresa Sams of Brooklyn Center, three brothers; Harold (Frances) Sams of Dayton, Ohio, Bill (Mary) Sams of Minnetonka, Everett (Ruth) Sams, Jr. of Parkersburg, sisters; Jo Ann (Clifford) Wilson Parkersburg, Virginia (Harold) Hicks of Nutter Fort, West Virginia, 9 grandchildren; Carrie, Jesse, Jacob, Heather, Mary Le, John, Steve, Molly & Melissa, 10 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Powell was preceded in death by his wife, Anna Belle and son, Douglas Brent.
