Oliver Earl Van Alstine
Age 80, of Hastings, MN
Died July 15, 2016 at his home on Pleasant Hill Century Farm in Denmark Township surrounded by family. He bravely fought through many health challenges. His farm was designated a Sesquicentennial Farm as it has been in the same family in agriculture for over 150 years. He lived on the farm his entire life.
Born January 1, 1936, to James Clifton and Nell (Stanchfield) Van Alstine at St. Luke's Hospital in St. Paul during a snow storm. All his life he disliked winter. He passed to his well-earned rest on a beautiful, sunny, summer afternoon.
He leaves his wife of 55 years, Valda (Adams) Van Alstine; daughter, Brenda Natala (Brian Quarstad) of St. Paul; son, Kevin Van Alstine (Annette) of Gwinn, MI; five grandchildren, Dr. Nakita Natala of Ypsilanti, MI, Benjamin Natala of London, UK, Seth Natala of Minneapolis and their father, Gladstone Natala of Mazabuka, Zambia, Steven Van Alstine of Big Rapids, MI, and Bethany Van Alstine of Gwinn, MI; sisters, Ruth (Perry) Christensen of Hager City, WI, and Frances Ratzlaff of Cottage Grove; many nieces, nephews, and friends. He was a beloved foster father to five sons and uncle who accepted and befriended everyone without judgment.
Oliver attended Basswood Grove District No. 35 one room schoolhouse through 8th grade and graduated from Hastings High School in 1954. Dairy farming was his life work. He helped with irrigation in the apple orchard, worked nights at Afton Alps and drove school bus for Hastings Public Schools.
He had a wonderful sense of humor and was curious about the world. He loved his family, friends, and animals. He enjoyed puzzles, maps, and traveling. He followed his grandchildren's travels daily on Find Friends. Occasionally he composed original poetry. He was a member of Denmark Township Historical Society and a life-long member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.
Memorial Service 6 PM, with visitation beginning at 5 PM, Thursday, July 21, 2016 Kok Funeral Home, 7676 80th St. S., Cottage Grove, MN, 55016. Dinner will be served following the service. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Denmark Township near his farm at a later date.
