Michael Fournelle

Michael R. "Mike" Fournelle 67, of St. Paul, died April 17, 2017. Mike was born on May 9, 1949 to Richard & Carolyn (Combs) in St. Paul. He grew up on the East side of St. Paul, graduation from Mechanic Arts High School in 1968. He has been a proud resident at Phoenix Residence since 1978 and prior to that he resided at Trevilla in New Brighton. He met his future wife while living at Phoenix in W. St. Paul and they wed November 7, 1986. Mike enjoyed watching old westerns and country music, he recently starting listening to light rock. He loved to watch hockey; his idea of a vacation was taking time off work every year to watch the boys state hockey tournament. You could also find him cheering on the San Jose Sharks. Mike
worked for 30+ years at Midwest Special Services. He was outgoing, took time to really get to know people, was always friendly for those who cared for him especially his numerous girlfriends. He was proud of his ability to be a human calendar and was right 99% of the time. Mike was extremely proud of his independence, was able to be the guardian of his own decisions and was always making plans for outings including attending plays, concerts, going out to eat. His favorite meal out was at a high end restaurant for a nice steak and a beer. Mike was a staunch advocate for people with disabilities; he spoke with legislators and appeared on TV in support of his strong beliefs. He was always vocal about the needs of his housemates and coworkers making sure everyone was taken care of. He liked being the "boss" and was proud to be the "big brother" to so many offering his support.
Preceded in death by wife, Becky; parents Richard & Carolyn. Survived by siblings, Steve (Kathy), Dave (Jolene), Lisa (Scott) Smestad; 8 nieces and nephews; and 9 great nieces and nephews; numerous friends from Phoenix Residence & Midwest Special Services.
Funeral service 11 am Tuesday, April 25 at Kok Funeral Home (7676 80th St. S. Cottage Grove) with visitation starting at 10am. Interment Calvary Cemetery, St. Paul.
