Lilly was born June 29, 1922 in Arlington, Minnesota to Adolph & Annie (Der Brelje) Schauer. She grew up on her family farm in Arlington. She married Steve Burtyk on Oct. 25, 1941 and raised their children on the family farm and off the farm in Arlington and in New Ulm until they moved to Inver Grove Heights in 1957. In 1973 they moved to Fish Trap Lake in Lincoln, MN where they spent the next 20 years. During those years they enjoyed spending the winter months in Mission, TX. They moved to Cottage Grove in the mid 90’s and Lilly continued to live there after her husband died in 2000.
Lilly spoke fluent German, and was known to Yodel on Sunday mornings in the kitchen, her home smelled like fresh baked bread, she looked classy and cared about her appearance, loved to dance especially polka, enjoyed playing cards, and frequently talked about wanting to be back on the farm. Lilly had a talent for drawing and always spoke what was on her mind. She took great pride in her garden, you couldn’t find a weed if you tried. You were always offered food when you first entered her home—no matter what time of the day. Lilly wasn’t always about the “warm and fuzzy” but you knew that she loved her family. She attended church regularly and had a strong belief in GOD.
