Larry (Laurel) D. Thompson, age 80, of Cottage Grove passed away peacefully on November 19, 2014. Preceded in death by wife of 50 years, Joan. Survived by daughters, Cheryl Powell, Mary Joy Thompson, Lori Thompson, and Kathy Lynn "K-Lynn" (Christopher) McKevitt; grandchildren, Levi Running, Aimee, Meredith, Isaac, Alison, and Heidi Laurel Powell, Ashley Rose, Nicole Kay, Matthew Benjamin, Andrew Elliot and Brooke Danielle McKevitt; siblings, Joan Moss, Ronald (Barb), Carol Miressi, and Evie Anderson; and other extended family and friends.
Larry was born on April 20, 1934 in Buffalo Center, Iowa to parents, Richard and Esther. He proudly served our country in the US Air Force as a Captain. He taught American History in Harmony, Gaylord, and Cottage Grove, Minnesota. He coached swimming, tennis, basketball, and chess. For 25 years he brought family, students, and men from the Union Gospel Mission to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. Larry was a dedicated family man and traveled with his family across the country each summer. Sharing his faith was important to him. He died and was revived and told us that he went to Heaven and saw Jesus.
Visitation will be held at 10 a.m. with the funeral at 11 a.m. Monday, November 24, 2014 at Hope Community Church, 8300 Hyde Ave. S., Cottage Grove. Interment with military honors at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.
