Larry Maurer, age 79 of Cottage Grove, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 3, 2016 at the Minnesota Veteran's Home in Minneapolis surrounded by his family.
Funeral 11 am Friday, Apr. 8, 2016 at Newport United Methodist Church, 1596-11th Ave., Newport. Visitation 4-8 pm Thurs., Apr. 7, 2016 at Kok Funeral Home, 7676-80th Street S., Cottage Grove and also one hour prior to the service on Friday. Interment Ft. Snelling National Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to The MS Society, Minnesota Veteran's Home in Minneapolis or Newport United Methodist Church.
Larry Gayle Maurer was born May 3, 1936 in Medford, Wisconsin to Galen and Dorothy (Allmann) Maurer. He grew up in Balsam Lake, Wisconsin where he graduated from high school in 1954 and immediately entered active duty in the United States Marine Corps. Larry and Lillian were married on April 24, 1959 in Quantico, Virginia where they were stationed in the Marine Corps. They moved to Cottage Grove in 1963 where they raised two wonderful boys. Larry was also part of the National Guard and retired in 1986 after 20 years. He worked for Ashland Oil Company as a warehouse supervisor for 25 years until his retirement in 1992. Larry enjoyed singing in the choir at Newport Methodist Church where he was a long time member. He was also a member of the Marine Corps League.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Galen and Dorothy; sisters Carol Berg and Judith Johnson; daughter-in-law Jennifer. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Lillian; sons Charles (Jackie), William (April); brothers William (Sharon) and Galen (Beth); sisters Barbara (Michael) Anderson, Neleeta Maurer, and Nancy Maurer; grandchildren Christopher, Joshua, Alexander, Ethan, David and Andrew; great grandson Garrett; brother-in-law Tom Berg and many nieces and nephews.
