John Mohr died peacefully on July 27, 2022, after battling Alzheimer’s disease. John’s story began 81 years ago, the oldest child of Lillian and Dick Mohr. He lived in Garfield, Minnesota with his mother, father, and sister Mary, before moving to Minneapolis.
The 60’s and 70’s brought adventure and accomplishments for John. He briefly served in the United States Army Reserves and later graduated from the University of Minnesota with a Bachelor of Arts with a major in History and a minor in Geography. He went on to earn a Master of Arts with a major in Urban Geography and a minor in Political Science and Architecture. Finishing with a Ph. D. a.b.d. in Geography.
John worked as President and CEO of Lifetrack Resources (formerly St Paul Rehabilitation Center) for 21 years. Prior to that, he served as Vice President of Admissions and Community Relations at Metropolitan State University. He was selected by peers for leadership, serving as chair of the Forum for Nonprofit Leadership; he served as President of the St Paul Area United Way Council of Agency Executives.
John’s community involvement spanned many organizations and impacted many lives through a lifetime of volunteerism.
Upon retirement, John and Sheila traveled extensively, including 39 countries and almost every U.S. state, accumulating stories and building memories to last a lifetime.
John will be fondly remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend who had a gregarious sense of humor. He was a passionate U of M Gopher fan and critic, nature lover, avid gardener, and lifelong learner. Even in death John is committed to learning as he donated his body to the Anatomy Bequest Program- U of M Medical School for research and educational purposes.
John is survived by his wife, Sheila; son, Jeff (Tanya Hodge); daughter, Amy; step-children, April Donham, Sharyl (Scott) Melson, Suzan Bunde, and Alan Bunde; sister, Mary (Christopher Broman); and a host of loving grandchildren, great-grandchildren, friends, and four legged companion, Dudley.
Celebration of Life 11:30 AM with visitation beginning 10:30 AM, Monday, August 22, 2022 at Kok Funeral Home, 7676 80th St. S., Cottage Grove, MN 55016. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to Alzheimer’s Association or Literacy Minnesota .
