Irene Mercereau

Irene Mercereau,
Age 94;
longtime resident of Newport died Friday afternoon October 19, 2012 at Woodwinds Hospital in Woodbury.

Irene Kathleen was born March 8, 1918 in Phillips, Wisconsin, the daughter of James & Bertha (Swift) Murphy. She was raised in Phillips and graduated from high school in 1936. She then went to teachers college and taught country school four years before moving to Chicago. On April 17, 1943 she was united in marriage with Donald Mercereau at Asbury Methodist Church in St. Paul. Irene loved long stitching, flower gardening, reading, and traveling in their fifth wheel. She especially enjoyed visiting Duluth and Grand Marais.

She was preceded in death by her husband Donald, daughter Debbie (Joe) Maiden, and grandson Jeffrey Elwell.

Irene is the beloved mother of Donna (Mike) Elwell; grandma of Lauren (Alan) Aery, Michael (Gwen L'Argent), Jamie (Tyler) Jones; great-grandchildren Gabby, Kali, Dalton, Noel and Harper; many nieces & nephews.
