Henry A. “Hank Jr.” Mattaini Jr. - Loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather at the age of 95, of Cottage Grove, passed away on March 18, 2018.
Private services are planned.
Hank owned and operated Hank’s on the corner of Concord Street and Grand Avenue in South Saint Paul after working there for his father and taking over the business with his brother James when Hank Sr. retired. When the packinghouse giants Swift & Co. and Armour & Co. finally succumbed to the times and urban renewal came about and wiped out the majority of the Concord Street businesses, including his, Hank took the risk and built the Channel House Supper Club - still on Concord Street but North of Wentworth with a view of the Mississippi. It was a beautiful restaurant with great food and lousy parking. His wife “Joanie” would hostess and his son Shawn was working alongside as well. At that time South St Paul was not fairing well for business owners and eventually Hank decided it best to sell the restaurant and semi-retire.
He is survived by his daughter Kim Mattaini; son Shawn (Kirsti); grandchildren Brook, Brandon, & Taya (Steven); great-grandchildren Rylee (Dan) Krenik, Justice, Dayton, Mason, Mackenzie, Zoey, Maddy, Max, Gabby; great-great-grandchildren Sofia, Olivia and Kayden; brother James; and niece Catherine (Dan) Steinbach. He is preceded in death by his wife LaVerne “My Joanie”; and parents Henry and Lena.
