George Smith

George C. Smith, age 92, of Cottage Grove, formerly of Shawano, WI and Chicago, IL, passed away peacefully on October 7, 2016. Born on February 20, 1924 in Detroit, MI, the son of John A. and Sadie E. (Worby). On October 9, 1948, he was united in marriage to Helen J. (Strainis) in Chicago, IL. George was a proud Navy veteran of WWII and Korea. He was a member of the VFW and American Legion Post 117, where he was a past commander. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing.

George is survived by daughter, Diana Lynn of Cottage Grove, MN; eight foster children including, Gail Stasiowski of Erie, PA and Cathy (Bill) Wells of Burbank, IL; three grandchildren; three nieces; and one nephew. George was preceded in death by wife of 59 years, Helen J.; parents; four brothers; and one sister.

Memorial Mass 11 AM with visitation beginning at 10 AM, Saturday, October 15, 2016 at the Church of St. Rita, 8694 80th St. S., Cottage Grove, MN, 55016. Interment with military honors to follow at Resurrection Cemetery, Mendota Heights, MN.

In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to the American Heart Association.
