Eugene Paul Sanz

Eugene “Gene” Paul Sanz, age 90, of Newport MN, passed away from this life, in the comfort of his home, and gained his wings, on Saturday, June 10, 2023.

Gene was a kind, loving, selfless soul who will be most remembered by a few of his favorite things in life, such as his love for the holidays, cherishing time with family, watching the grandkids having fun, and sneaking a taste of his favorite foods, Gene will be especially remembered for his passion of country music, which was contagious, and his enthusiasm for what he referred to as his ‘free style dancing’ with friends and family to his favorite local bands every weekend. When he got out his cowboy hat, polished his boots up and put on a fancy western shirt, we always knew it was “Boot Scoot and Boogie” time.

On the Saturdays Gene enjoyed “bumming” around town as he called it, getting hot dogs at the dealerships while negotiating for his next pride and joy. His devotion and love for his cars will most certainly not be easily forgotten.

In Gene’s younger days, he took pride in being a fireman with the Newport Fire Department for 18 years. After retiring, he continued to show his love and dedication by volunteering at the Newport Fire Department Booya stand every summer and long into his retirement years, where he enjoyed his day, chit chatting and handing out complimentary bowls of booya to his “VIP” guests (family, friends, and neighbors).

Gene loved life, was a generous soul and was always there to lend a helping hand when and where he could. He was a beloved father, cherished grandpa and adored uncle. He will be deeply missed by many, and is survived by his son, Gregory Sanz (Teri, Pam); daughters, Christina Sanz (Chad), Terrie Tornio (Mark), and Erica Johnson (Terry); several loving grandchildren and great grandchildren; nephews; nieces and his 4-legged fur baby, Ruby.

He is proceeded in death by his wife, Carol Sanz; parents, Fred and Freda Sanz; brothers, Lester and Freddie Sanz; and two nieces.

Funeral Visitation, 10:00 a.m. with the service at 11:00 a.m. and Lunch at 12:00, Saturday, July 22^, 2023, at Kok Funeral Home (7676 80^th St. S. Cottage Grove, MN).
