Edward J. Weiss, age 91 of Cottage Grove, passed away June 7, 2020.
Edward was born December 14, 1928 in St. Paul to Frank and Theresa (Graner) Weiss. He graduated from Washington High School and was recognized as a standout athlete, especially at a football player. Ed met the love of his life at an early age and formerly started dating Donna Mae Walsh while in high school. They were married on May 29, 1948.
Ed started his railroad career with the Great Northern where he worked alongside his dad repairing box cars. Later he served as a supervisor where he travelled quite a bit with the Burlington Northern.
Ed was naturally athletic and was proud to say that he was “scouted” by the Green Bay Packers. He was a gifted softball player and was given the distinction of becoming a member of the Softball Hall of Fame. Ed was also an excellent golfer, something he was able to do until the age of 90.
He and Donna enjoyed spending the winter months in Arizona and the summer months at their lake home near Brainerd. He will always be remembered for his regular routine of a daily Rob Roy, pepperoni and cheese crackers and his scratch offs. Family was extremely important to him and loved spending time with his siblings, his children and grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his wife Donna; parents Frank and Theresa; son-in-law Jim Mitchell; siblings Anna Petersen, Frank Weiss, Matt “Boots” Weiss and Marie Gangl. Edward is survived by daughters Cindy Mitchell and Suzanne (Rob) Warner; grandchildren Bill (Melissa) Mitchell, Colleen (Mike) Murray, Sarah (Garrett) Lewis and Tom (Amanda) Warner; 6 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
