Douglas Nelson

Douglas A. Nelson, age 80 of Cottage Grove, formerly of Afton, passed away Mar. 7, 2015 at the Woodbury Care Center.

Funeral Service will be 11 am Monday, March 23, 2015 at Cottage Grove United Church of Christ, 7008 Lamar Ave. S., Cottage Grove, MN. Visitation will be 4-7 pm Sunday, March 22, 2015 at Kok Funeral Home, 7676 80th St. S., Cottage Grove, MN with a Masonic Service at 6 pm. Interment to follow at Cottage Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to the Wounded Warrior Project.

Douglas Alan Nelson was born October 3, 1934 in St. Paul, Minnesota to Lincoln and Laura (Smallidge) Nelson. He graduated from Hastings High School and went on to receive a bachelor's degree at Macalester College in 1954. Doug served in the US Army for a few years and returned to Minnesota. He worked at Sperry Univac for several years, but decided to follow his heart into farming full time. Doug was a long time member of the Afton Planning Commission and the Masonic Accacia Lodge #52 near Cottage Grove. He was married to Marion (Evers) Gould in 1990 and the two of them enjoyed travelling to family events and spending time with their children and grandchildren. Doug always enjoyed visiting with the guys at morning coffee.

Doug is survived by brother Wallace (Mary Ann) of Afton; nephews, Paul and Barry Nelson; step-children, Julie (Ray) Loftus, Lori (Randy) Bullock, Jill Gould ("KC" Cushing), Marla (Joseph) Sand and Nathan (Katie) Gould; twelve step-grandchildren and extended family. Preceded in death by his wife Marion.
