Dorothy Witzel

Dorothy L. Witzel, age 91, a long time resident of Newport, passed away December 24, 2019.

Memorial service will be 10:30 am Monday, December 30, 2019 at Newport Lutheran Church, 900 – 15 ^th Street, Newport.  A private interment will be held at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery.

Dorothy Lenore (Melin) Witzel was born August 7, 1928 in Marshall County, Minnesota to Emil and Marie Hellquist.  She was a member of the Newport Lutheran Church for many years, a 3M employee and homemaker.  She enjoyed “being on the go” and spending time with friends, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  She and husband Gordy also traveled to many countries with tour groups.

Dorothy is survived by her husband Gordy of 38 wonderful years; son Alan (Patricia) Melin and daughter Julie (Mona) Melin; son/daughter-in-law David (Doris) Witzel, Karen (Gene) Thornton; grandchildren Jessica (Jason) Rasch, Russ Thornton, Kevin Thornton, Scott (Stephanie) Witzel, Laura (Eric) Burger and Becky (Andy) Johnson; as well as several great-grandchildren; brothers Roland (Lillian) and John Hellquist; sister Marilyn Dalchow.  She also leaves many other family members and friends who will miss her.  Dorothy was preceded in death by husbands Garth Schantzen and Vern Melin; sisters Betty Erickson and Elaine Langlie.
