Brian S. Smith, 71, of Afton, died October 7, 2008 at Bethesda Rehabilitation Hospital in Saint Paul. Brian was born on August 10, 1937 in St. Paul, Minnesota. He worked at Buckbee Mears Co. in St. Paul for over 38 years where he helped design the equipment to automate shadow mask production, increasing the production rate nearly 20-fold. As a result, he was appointed as a self-taught design engineer. He also served as a first responder, chairman of the Safety Committee from 1972 until his retirement and as Emergency Coordinator.
Brian’s volunteer work included promoting Civil Defense & Drug Abuse Awareness with the St. Paul Jaycees, serving as a DNR firearms safety instructor and serving on the I-500 Snowmobile Race Committee.
Brian is survived by Karen “Judy”, his wife of 30 years, four children; Greg (Julie) Smith, Christine (Tom) Krueger, Scott (Lynn) Smith & Lynn (Jim) Reinhardt, eleven grandchildren, one great grand-daughter, his brother, Kent and sister, Linda Baumgartner, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Gilmer Douglas Smith and mother, Constance Syneva Edman.
